Abstract
Type 1 diabetes mellitus results from insulin deficiency due to destructive process of the beta cells. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is divided into autoimmune-mediated (type 1A) and idiopathic (type 1B). Since Imagawa et al. reported 11 cases of fulminant autoantibody-negative type 1 diabetes as a novel subtype, additional cases were described. Most of type 1B diabetes were characterized by abrupt and severe onset of disease, negative status of islet-related autoantibodies, elevated serum pancreatic enzyme, and a near-normal range of HbA1c. We have assessed the 32-year old man who had fulminant diabetes associated with diabetic ketoacidosis and acute renal failure, and so report the case with the review of literatures.
Key Words: Fulminant, Type 1B diabetes, ketoacidosis
