Medical Treatment of Diabetic Polyneuropathy

Abstract

Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus, and the prevalence of neuropathic pain is estimated about 20% of diabetic patients. The pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy is still uncertain, and thought to be complex process. Given that diabetic polyneuropathy is the most common cause of neuropathic pain, the treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy is not different from that of other neuropathic pain. This review will focus on drugs recommended in current guidelines for neuropathic pain, and drug trials for mechanism-based treatment of diabetic polyneuropathy.
