Abstract |
Triglyceride, which is absorbed from small intestine or synthesized in the liver, could be measured high in the blood circulation under condition of insulin resistance. Hypertriglyceridemia is combined with low level of serum HDL cholesterol level and abdominal obesity. First, such low HDL particle could accelerate the process of atherogenesis. Second, triglyceride-rich particles could penetrate into the vessel wall and directly trigger oxidative and inflammatory stress. Third, high triglyceride level is highly associated with high level of inflammation. However, it is not clear whether direct lowering of triglyceride may prevent coronary event. It may be largely due to high variation of individual triglyceride level. In addition, post-prandial triglyceride level may reflect burden of atherogenisity more than fasting level. Further studies are necessary for evaluating any type of serum triglyceride level as more specific marker for the cardiovascular disease event. (Korean Clinical Diabetes J 11:118-122, 2010) |
