Current Status and Future Directions in Dyslipidemia Treatment

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease accounts for the major cause of death in diabetic patients. Several studies, including Framingham Heart study showed dyslipidemia is one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular disease. The importance of treating dyslipidemia is emphasized to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Through development of easier and simple cholesterol analysis method, now we are able to analyze not only checking total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol but also knowing the importance of clinical significance of each values. Therefore, we discuss evolving paradigm of dyslipidemia treatment through comparison between previous treatment and the prospect future point of view of treatment.
